Sound Seeking - 2007 Keith Boyd 12.21.07
'07 has been an amazing year. It of course has had its' share of vagarities . The war continues on its obscene and illegal way. All of the presidential candidates are so busy chest thumping and braying about how religious they are that they fail to see the real deal being dealt with by ordinary people. Yes we're boxed in by credit card debt and housing foreclosures. We're slammed with the weirdo weather effects of global warming and it seems that lately people have begun taking out their inner demons on unsuspecting crowds by shooting them in public places (HEY NRA, TRY KILLING SO MANY PEOPLE WITH A STICK SOMETIME.GUNS DO KILL PEOPLE!!!!) after blogging about it or posting to YouTube. Humm.Maybe 2007 hasn't been so "amazing" after all. Just when I was about to turn this article around and write about the super, fantastic and cool stuff that's been going on I hear word that Brittney Spears' sixteen year old sister is pregnant. Thanks a lot Jamie Lynn Spears. You are the swollen straw that finally broke this camel's back! Okay, so this year sucked but here is some of the music that made it less so. Support the weird! Give your money to the purveyors of the independent voice. Shop at owner run book and music stores! FIGHT THE POWER!
1. Six Organs of Admittance - Shelter from the Ash
The perfect soundtrack to our firestorm in San Diego this year. Ben Chasny is a genius and he just keeps on getting better. This album is as vital a piece of music as you are likely to hear in this or any other year.
White Rainbow - Prism of Eternal Now
Channeling equal parts Terry Riley and Taj Mahal Travelers, White Rainbow will soothe you and send you to distant crystalline dimensions.
3. Kawabata Makota - Hosanna Mantra
The Speed Guru slows it down here and gets downright freaky. This tribute to the spirit of Krautrockers Popul Vuh is an amazing and engrossing listen.
4. Tinariwen - AMAN IMAN
Tuareg rebels with twangy guitars noodling late into the desert night with call and response vocals that cut you to your soul. This is the real world.
5. SunnO))) - Oracle
A double dose of what makes SunnO))) so great. Overwhelming guitars and creepy atmosphere. SunnO))) live is a religious experience.
6. Throbbing Gristle - Part Two The Endless Not
The reigning monarchs of freakiness return with there best album ever.
7. Earthless - Rhythms From A Cosmic Sky
Second dose from our homegrown masters of Hawkwind inspired space epics. This album crushes your head in it's' vise-grip fury.
8. Om - Pilgrimage
Om has carved out their own place in modern music. They come on like an endless prayer that shoots you out to the furthest reaches of you mind.
9. Stielas Storhett - Vandrer.
TRUE BLACK METAL! ALL HAIL!
10. Wooden Shjips - S/T
This SF band pumps out some maximum fuzzified, Doorsy, Garagey goodness. The up in your face organ playing really hits the spot.
11. High on Fire - Death Is This Communion
The mighty return of High on Fire just killed me. Crank it up and raise your battleaxe high!
12. Oren Ambarchi - Pendulum's Embrace
Similar to his classic, "Grapes from the Estate" this beautiful pulsing disc is pointing the way forward for guitar playing.
13. Cloudland Canyon - Silver Tongued Sisyphus
Second helping of Kraut/Psych from these weirdoes. Excellent and bent beyond the norm.
14. Films of Kenneth Anger - Volume 1 & 2
Finally! These are films made for the love of film. They luxuriate in Occult splendor. The voice-over commentary option from Anger is interesting and eye-opening.
15. Films of Alejandro Jodorowsky - Six Disc Set
Surreal and spiritual. These films will throw you for a loop. The beauty is meted out in equal proportion to the horror.
So there is it. Goodbye 2007. Thanks for all of the memories and nightmares. Here's to a new year of turmoil, struggle, high drama and low farce. Here's also to a new year of sweet, soul redemptive music, music, music.
