Buzz or Howl - Worship the Sun as the Destroyer of Dreams
Lotushouse Records - 2005-2006
Buzz or Howl, Eric Nielsen and Bruce McKenzie, an ambient/avant/psych/noise duo, released their first record on Lotus House in a four-part, original series inspired by the mastery of Acid Mothers Temple and Japanese, magical artist Mizuki Shigeru.
Artists Krista and Eric Nielsen, Senkay, created the four-piece series with gauche, pencil, chalk, and pens on 3' by 4' watercolor paper. The series' main character is based on a Japanese man, Koji Shimura (drummer of High Rise, White Heaven, Acid Mothers Temple, and Mainliner), who has sat in with Bruce and Eric in Tokyo many times over the past five years. Shimura is an impeccable human being and portrays many of the virtues of the ancient Japanese hero. more
The first painting is a portrait of Shimura, approaching his home after a long trek through the mountains of Japan . The second depicts Shimura as he just walks into his temple to find his wife slain by a creature/monster with octopus-like arms. The third features the creature/monster ready to attack again. In the final piece, Shimura stands with a Buddha face, puncturing the creature into the ground.
Each of the four paintings have been hand-torn into 6" by 12" pieces, then folded into 24 one-of-a-kind cdr covers; 96 separate pieces in all. Every cover is numbered and stamped, then stuffed along with a full-color postcard print of one of the originals. A grid is printed on the postcard, signifying which section each cover originated; i.e. Part IV of IV A1 1/24. On the back, liner notes with information about the tracks have been hand-typed on each postcard. The three cards portray the first three paintings, and the fourth is one of the card backs with typed notes. This grid presentation is the complete, original piece of the final chapter.
The 44 minutes cdr is two Buzz or Howl songs, with the second represented through four movements. " Think Acid Mothers Temple meets John Fahey at his most latter-day extreme. It's pressed up in a limited edition of 96 copies in hand-assembled sleeves, each bearing one-of-a-kind artwork." - Fred Mills, Magnet Magazine, March 2006. These pieces are available for sale.
