From Sam....
Gawd!! I hope the walls don’t cave in on us THIS SUNDAY, Strangers!!
Sunday, May 13 will be the loudest Stay Strange yet!! Frank Melendez and Riververb! Also on the bill is the equally loud Actuary from Los Angeles. Plus a rare performance by artist Gerritt Wittmer.
SUNDAY, MAY 13-
RIVERVERB/ACTUARY/GERRITT WITTMER
THE KAVA GALLERY - 2804 KETTNER BLVD - 7PM - $5.00 - ALL AGES SHOW!
Riververb is always in a constant change, and I hear that the latest incarnation is the best so far! Judge for yourself! it’s some heavy stuff! Face morphing grinder sludge. Last time Riververb played, no slayed, the smoke turned black from monolithic chunks of acid-noise.
Actuary shake the shit loose! Los Angeles breeds some sick stuff and this by no means drops the ball. Not only are this tunes in your face, it’s in your skull too! Mean ass nitro venom. Gory!!
Gerritt Wittmer is an artist in the darkest sense possible. I’m not sure what he’ll be doing at this month’s Stay Strange, but if it’s anything like his performance at LUFF, it’s going to be scary!!!

Earthless, Titan and Assemble Head in Sunburst Sound at the Kensington Club - The Best Show of The Year! Period
By Eric Nielsen 8.6.7

The best show in SD this year happened last night at the Ken Club. It was an all out Tee Pee Records noise fest in the most beautiful, loud, earth shaking, skull shattering way.

Assemble Head (from SF) started the night by playing most of their new album. Their new record is my anthem for the summer. It's called Ekranoplan and if you haven't heard it you should. It's authentic stoner rock with solid song structures, excellent guitar leads, stunning bass (I found a lot of the bass was actually a Korg) and beautiful heavy loud real tunes.

All the pictures are of Assemble Head. These guys rocked in a way that made you feel young. They had a Wurlitzer, Korg, distorted bass, sitar kinda thing, theremin, keys and some sweet in the pocket mixed down low vocals. They played the songs from the album in a way that was so true to the record. The lead guitars, bass lines and even the theremin were recreated in a beautiful way that reflected the perfect album, perfectly. I love when a band can do that. There was nothing wrong and everything right in their performance. If you missed the show, get the record.

Next up was Titan. Titan is not for everybody but they are for me. They can feel a bit prog math rock/Yes progressions and their high ended guitar, but they have some of the greatest purest tones. Reflected in long synth drones and open space, juxtaposed with beautiful mean lead guitar, pulsing Pink Floyd like long build ups and gentle eastern Buddhist tones, these songs explode and mesmerize as the parameters on the synth's start folding over on themselves.

By far the greatest of the night was Earthless. This was the second time I had seen them and fuck if they haven't come a long way. The Ken club was the best place imaginable to see them. The shape of the room, the sound man and the band created the strongest, loudest, most mind shattering show of the year. This band is the best that San Diego has to offer. They completely broke down my whole concept of sound. They rode the night as an apocalyptic horsemen that has nowhere to stop and bed for the night. The earth shattering builds and the never ending 50 minute set left you completely spent, broken, rebuilt, re imagining what music is, challenging your existence, making you fever dream. These folks are idiot savants whirling you away into a tornado dustbowl of sound you never heard. I love seeing a drummer as the focal point of a band. There is no doubt that Mario is the best drummer in town. I knew that when Clikitat was playing. If you missed last night you really did miss the best show of the year! Support San Diego's jewels. We're blessed to have this band from this town. Go see them, learn, listen, accept, breathe and wash yourself in a communal blessing of power.
