From Sam....
Gawd!! I hope the walls don’t cave in on us THIS SUNDAY, Strangers!!
Sunday, May 13 will be the loudest Stay Strange yet!! Frank Melendez and Riververb! Also on the bill is the equally loud Actuary from Los Angeles. Plus a rare performance by artist Gerritt Wittmer.
SUNDAY, MAY 13-
RIVERVERB/ACTUARY/GERRITT WITTMER
THE KAVA GALLERY - 2804 KETTNER BLVD - 7PM - $5.00 - ALL AGES SHOW!
Riververb is always in a constant change, and I hear that the latest incarnation is the best so far! Judge for yourself! it’s some heavy stuff! Face morphing grinder sludge. Last time Riververb played, no slayed, the smoke turned black from monolithic chunks of acid-noise.
Actuary shake the shit loose! Los Angeles breeds some sick stuff and this by no means drops the ball. Not only are this tunes in your face, it’s in your skull too! Mean ass nitro venom. Gory!!
Gerritt Wittmer is an artist in the darkest sense possible. I’m not sure what he’ll be doing at this month’s Stay Strange, but if it’s anything like his performance at LUFF, it’s going to be scary!!!

venue: House of Blues, San Diego
stars: 7 stars
review: Two great performers, one so-so venue. This was my first time attending a condert at the new HOB in San Diego. I was very disappointed. It seems to me that most of the people in attendance were not there for the two incredible performers, but more to socialize.
Rachael, who I saw last year at Canes and was incredible there tried hard but she was difficult to hear over the roar of the single mixer that seemed to be going on through out the club. One guy I overheard telling his prospective bedmate how much he was into music and especially loved live music. I wanted to turn around and say "If you are so into music, shut the f$%& up and listen to it. Nevertheless, she is an incredible live performer and has one of the sultriest voices around today.
The crowd got a little quieter when Ray Lamontagne came on stage. However, he is such a soft spoken man it was hard to hear what he was saying between songs. When he sang he really belted out the tunes. He was incredible. The live version of Trouble was even better than the CD. He did several new songs that made me anxious for a new CD from this very talented singer songwriter. Seeing Ray perform helped me imagine what it must have been like to see another great songwriter, Jim Croce, perform live.
Overall, the performers were incredible and I would go see them again anywhere but HOB.
I was really hoping that HOB was going to be another good venue to see some great acts here in San Diego. Now I fear they will only take away good acts from better venues like 4th and B and the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.
