Editors Note: One of my favorite all time live shows was Fugazi at the old Soma, where the Childrens Museum School once stood. And, where the new Childrens Museum school will stand next Fall.
"The song Boycott Soma was written about the business practices of [owner] Len Paul," says Shitgiveits guitarist Todd Awful. Sample lyrics:
"Len was seen bribing the fire marshal - boycott Soma
Len called the cops on the Fugazi show - boycott Soma
How much more do you need to know - boycott Soma
You're a poser if you go to his shows - boycott Soma
I can't stand this place, it's a fucking disgrace
Rippin' off all the kids, I won't support none of this."
"He tries to crush the competition by sending his people to other shows and calling the fire marshal on them," claims Awful, "or calling the cops if another place doesn't have the proper cabaret license for the night. Someone [claimed they] actually saw him hand an envelope to the fire marshal at one of his own over-capacity shows." Awful declines to identify that someone.
A "Boycott Soma" page on MySpace was recently deleted by website administrators. At various times, boycotting Soma has been advocated by John Reis (of Hot Snakes and Rocket From The Crypt) and Pinback's Rob Crow. According to radio station KSDT's page on the UCSD website, " It is an open secret in San Diego that the Soma's owner and operator Len Paul is a huge jerk and you should never interact with him if you can help it. Shows at the Soma are always more expensive than they should be and the sound is consistently poor.Soma's website is just a ridiculous piece of shit." At this writing, Paul had not responded to requests for rebuttal.
